It’s that time of the year when families gather together to give thanks and generally spend time with their loved ones. And it does not have to be boring. There are several Thanksgiving activities families can engage in to make this time of the year special and also create lasting memories around the dinner table.

Thanksgiving Day is a day families gather together to give thanks and it is celebrated every fourth Thursday in November. The date was chosen in 1941 by the US Congress and a proclamation issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942. This year, the auspicious day fell on November, 28th.

To make it more special and meaningful apart from gathering around the table, families can do these Thanksgiving activities to bring joy, fun and entertainment as well as use the opportunity to prepare for the last celebration which is Christmas Day.  That said, here is a list of things to do on a special day

Play Thanksgiving games: After the family has eaten and relaxed, some games can increase bonding and fun time among family members. Thanksgiving games provide an opportunity to know what is going on in each other’s lives. Members can talk about what they are most grateful for and the key highlights of the year for them. Games like Mad-libs, scavenger hunts, pictionary, or going out to watch NFL games can also work.

Make a Thanksgiving video: One of the major Thanksgiving activities families must not omit this year is making videos. Instead of just taking pictures, families should make a live video talking about the things they are grateful for and the activities of the day. This creates lasting memories especially when everyone is usually home for the occasion. You can rewatch these videos the next year to mark growth and milestones.

Take a road trip: Thanksgiving Day must not be celebrated at home. It can be an opportunity to take the family bonding process seriously. Families can take a road trip using the opportunity to see new things, bond and generally connect with nature. However, ensure that where your family is going is safe and fun at the same time.

Make care packages and volunteer: As you celebrate with your family, it is important to remember the less privileged. One of the Thanksgiving activities to include these people in your celebration is to make care package for them. It can be filled with things they would need like food, snacks, and winter outfits. Families can also cook large meals and share them with the nearest shelter or volunteer in these homes.

Share Thanksgiving memories: Thanksgiving days are usually eventful and as such create an atmosphere of ruckus, chaos and sometimes disagreements. This year, families should spend time talking out the events of the previous year to settle any quarrels and to remember the good times.

Make a holiday shopping list: Finally, Thanksgiving activities should also incorporate plans for Christmas Day and holidays. It is the the time of year when shopping is always in full swing, therefore, families should take the time to plan what they will need in the holidays, plan gifts and the promos they need to take advantage of.
