Florence Pugh has always been outspoken and some form of rebel ever since her backlash over the free the nipple valentine dress. The actress has stated severally that no one would bully her into caving to their social conventions and months later is still dancing to same tune.
To show that the backlash did not affect her, she freed the nipple in another pink Valentino creation. As if daring her critics to do their worst but most importantly, she is speaking out for women in Hollywood and what they are going through.
In an interview with The Times of London published on Sunday, Florence shared her struggles on how women are treated in Hollywood. According to her, there are some places where women are already fine-tuned to stay but the moment, they try to get above it, they are termed, problematic.
In her words, “There are fine lines women have to stay within, otherwise they are called a diva, demanding, problematic. And I don’t want to fit into stereotypes made by others.” Adding that, “It is really exhausting for a young woman to just be in this industry, and actually other industries.”
Recall Florence Pugh had cut her hair in 2023 to take “vanity out of the picture”. The buzzcut was an attempt to not fit into conventional beauty standards. In her current interview, she further shared that she finds it weird that there are more emphasis on how women in the public eye are expected to look.
In her words, “I remember watching this industry and feeling that I wasn’t represented. I remember godawful headlines about how Keira Knightley isn’t thin anymore, or watching women getting torn apart despite being talented and beautiful,” adding “The only thing people want to talk about is some useless crap about how they look. And so I didn’t care to abide by those rules.”
It is quite clear that as long as her career goes on, Florence Pugh will continue to speak up about stereotypes women in Hollywood face. More awareness may cause changes on how famous women are generally perceived.
