To be valued by others, you must show that you value yourself. Therefore, you must build self-respect for yourself to change how people interact and relate with you. TBN has learned some good lessons about self-respect over this year and has curated a few tips for our readers.

TBN believes that one way to build self-respect is to not force yourself into where you’re not wanted. Don’t let the fear of being alone keep you in a place where you will be mocked because you want to belong. Another tip is to not be too desperate whilst befriending someone. As soon you notice, that the person don’t match your energy, withdraw.

A third point is whining about bad habits but doing nothing to fix them. You must make a concerted effort to fix any habit you believe is a challenge. TBN does not know it all, therefore, we asked 6 people things they have learnt and do to build their self-respect. Here are their insightful answers

Henry

For me, I learned to stop explaining myself more than twice unless it’s necessary. Most people try to act wild to get a reaction out of you. If they didn’t understand the weight of the words I spoke or the boundaries I tried to maintain twice, then I didn’t try again. I distance myself from them.

Johnson

I believe it’s key to not let nobody “trick you out of your position.” Hold on to your integrity by any means necessary and don’t forget the standards you uphold as a person. Also, don’t let your emotions control who you are and/or who you’re trying to grow into.

Daniela

One thing I do to build self-respect is purely focusing on myself. I take care of my body and mind by giving them what they need to keep me going. I take vitamins, exercise for longevity (somatics, yoga, taichi), meditation, reading, and cultivating relationships. I respect my environment by organizing and cleaning them.  I also respect others and their space by treating others with the same level of respect I  give myself and providing space for people who are not at the same level.

Jamil

I have a compassionate, rather than self-critical, inner voice that allows me to learn from my mistakes and participate in self-improvement rather than shame and despair. I also keep making decisions to move myself forward and meet the challenges life puts in front of me. I don’t operate from a place of low self-confidence and shame.

Frank

I build self-respect for myself by not putting up with things I don’t like and sharing my opinions as much as others do. Everything stems from there.  I have boundaries and a deep internal feeling that I deserve respect and equal treatment in all situations. In any situation that doesn’t suit my inner sense of dignity, I leave.

Derrick

I always have clarity on my wants and needs at any time. I also make choices to honour that.  I focus inward thinking about the actions/ thoughts/emotions I control in any situation. I recognize that we are our world, but we are not the world for others. Therefore I don’t expect someone else to behave/think/feel about me in ways I want them to. This is also respecting that, which is outside of us
